DARREN
LAW AND G & W MOTORSPORTS EXPERIENCE UPS AND DOWNS AT BARBER
250
Darren
Law was a busy driver this past weekend as he competed in two different
classes in the Barber 250 at the Park at the new and immaculately
prepared Barber Motorsports Park facility in Birmingham, Alabama.
Grand Am Cup
The first race on Darren's slate for the weekend was the Grand Am
Cup endurance event which saw him in the cockpit of the G & W prepared
GT3 Cup Porsche in the GS I class. Law's teammate for the event
was Chris Dyson, and the pair showed competitive form throughout
the weekend.
Dyson's stint in the car ended at roughly the halfway point of the
race, and as Law took over the seat, the G crew vaulted the car
from fourth to first with some very quick pit work.
Darren had this to say about the first half of the race, "Chris
(Dyson) did a terrific job, especially considering this race was
his first time in the car, and I really can't thank the G & W guys
enough for the quick pit stop. It really put us in a good position."
Law spent the next hour in a great battle for the lead of the race
with JF Dumoulin in another Porsche. The two exchanged the lead
several times until Law was finally able to pull out a comfortable
five-second margin.
"The race for the lead with JF was great. We gave each other room
and raced side by side through several corners. I was glad to finally
be able to get some breathing room toward the end," said Law about
the battle.
Despite being in the lead, a fuel pickup problem surfaced on Law's
car with only three laps remaining, and the team had to settle for
sixth as Law was forced to stop for a "splash and go."
Rolex Daytona Prototype
The Rolex Sportscar series event was next on Law's schedule, as
he drove The Valley Group/USI Insurance G & W prepared Picchio/BMW
in the Daytona Prototype class. The team chased handling problems
on the car most of the weekend, and contact with a GT3 car early
on in the event broke the steering rack and ended Law's day.
"We're still working on figuring out just what these cars like,"
said Law. "The car was loose through a lot of the high speed transitions,
and even though we tried several spring shock and bar changes, we
just couldn't get the back end nailed down. We're planning to do
some more testing, and see what we can't find."
The next race on the schedule will be the Grand American 400 at
California Speedway in Fontana, California on the weekend of June
6-8.
