WILD CAUTION-FILLED ROLEX WATKINS WEEKEND
SEES LAW, DONOHUE, AND BRUMOS PORSCHE COME HOME SIXTH
A combination
of smart driving and good judgement allowed Darren Law, David Donohue,
and Sascha Maassen to avoid trouble and bring the #58 Red Bull Brumos
Porsche Fabcar to the checkered flag a respectable and competitive
6th in the fifth round of the 2004 Grand American Rolex Sports Car
series. The tricky and daunting Watkins Glen International
Raceway proved a challenge for all those involved as the six hour
event saw 10 full course injury free cautions for a total of 32
laps.
Law was given the task of qualifying, and placed the car a respectable
4th for the starting grid. Grand American Rolex Sports Car
series rules mandate that the qualifying driver must start the race,
and the Phoenix resident took the start and ran an exciting two
hour stint before handing off to Porsche works driver Sascha Maassen
on lap 50.
"That was a great stint," remarked Law after his time
behind the wheel. "It was pretty much a scrap the whole
time that the race was green. I had a good battle with Magnussen
(Lista Doran) and a little dice with Cort (Wagner, G & W Doran).
There were quite a few laps under yellow, but I just tried to keep
my nose clean and turn some quick laps."
Toward the end of a tank of fuel, the #58 Fabcar began to exhibit
a fuel pickup problem which ultimately lead to a last minute pitstop
for fuel late in the race, dropping the Red Bull machine to 6th.
"We've definitely had our share of bad luck," said Law
following the race. "The encouraging thing is that we have
the speed, and we show it pretty much every weekend. It'll
come good here at some point."
The race was covered on Speed, and included some terrific in-car
footage of Law's stint in the Brumos.
Law, Donohue and the Brumos Porsche squad next head to Daytona for
the Paul Revere 250 the weekend of June 30th through July 1st.
