LAW TAKES STRONG SECOND PLACE AT GRAND AM CUP EVENT IN FONTANA
After another impressive run through the field, road racing ace
Darren Law of Phoenix piloted the #6 Zoom Motorsports Porsche 996
to a strong second place finish in the past Saturday's Grand Am
Cup endurance race at California Speedway in Fontana. Law, who took
over from teammate Mike McCalmont of Ancaster Canada on the 20th
lap of the 71 lap event, and turned the fastest lap of any Porsche
in the field for the third race running.
Law's drive to a podium finish in the California 200 secured a 2nd
place spot for himself and McCalmont in the Grand Am Cup driver's
standings, and marks the highest finish of any Porsche thus far
in the 2005 Grand Am Cup schedule.
Law's spectacular California 200 run was not easy however, and he
talked about some of the race action.
"We had a great race," said Darren following the vent.
"Mike (McCalmont) qualified it 26th and ran a good opening
stint. I got in on the first yellow, and I worked my way up to the
front. We were turning great lap times, although we are still a
bit down on top speed to the BMW and the Mustang. Grand Am is doing
a good job with the rules and keeping things competitive."
"We definitely had a good run overall, but I was having brake
trouble most of my stint and had to pump the pedal before every
brake zone. I was leading for the last portion of the race, and
a caution came out with about 7 laps to go. On the restart the (race
winning Multimatic) Mustang got the jump, and I knew it would be
tough to beat the V-8 power. When the Mustang got by I ended having
a great fight with Boris Said (Anchor Racing BMW M3). We went side
by side for a number of corners, but I held him off and kept my
position until the end. I have to thank our crew chief Kirk Spencer,
our engineer Greg Fordahl and the Zoom crew for a great job. I can’t
wait for Laguna."
Law and the Zoom crew head next for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and
the famed "corkscrew" the weekend of April 29th and 30th
for the US Sports Car Invitational.
