LAW PULLS DOUBLE DUTY AT WET & WILD WATKINS WEEKEND
Endurance racing specialist Darren Law, of Phoenix, Arizona, had
a busy weekend this past Saturday and Sunday, as he competed in
the Grand American Rolex Series Sahlen's 6 Hours of the Glen and
the Grand-Am Cup Chemung Canal Trust 200. Both races were held at
Watkins Glen International Raceway in Watkins Glen, New York.
Rolex Series.
After showing encouraging lap times in practice, the Sahlen’s
6 Hour came to an abrupt end this weekend for Rolex Grand American
regulars Darren Law, David Donohue and the #58 Red Bull Brumos Porsche
team. The Brumos squad parked the #58 entry following contact in
the event.
After qualifying 14th with a lap of 1:48.151, Law took the green
flag to start the 6-hour endurance contest held at the famed 3.4
mile Watkins Glen natural terrain ‘long” configuration
road racing circuit. Law turned the #58 Red Bull sponsored entry
over to co-drivers David Donohue and Lucas Luhr after completing
his first stint, and shortly thereafter, the team ran into trouble,
as an electrical problem took them out for several laps. Once the
issue was resolved the Brumos Porsche returned to competition, but
the weekend ended later due to some late race contact.
"We were out there really just trying to keep our nose clean,"
remarked Law after the race. "My stint went well, and I made
up some good ground. We were turning competitive times, but after
I turned the car over, we had some problems. It does hurt us a bit
in terms of points, but we'll be back at them again in Daytona."
Grand-Am Cup
After a stirring drive through much of the 73-car Grand-Am Cup field,
Law was able to secure a 4th place finish for himself and co-driver
Mike McCalmont in the #6 Zoom Motorsports prepared Porsche 996.
Team principal McCalmont who qualified the Zoom Porsche 24th, turned
the car over to Law at the first caution on lap 12 of the 56 lap
event. Law, who quickly found himself at the back of the field following
the pit stop, pulled out all the stops as he charged through the
field to finish a well-earned 4th at the checkered flag.
"We had a terrific car in the Grand-Am Cup race," remarked
Darren, "and I think we probably had a shot at winning it today.
Once I got in I just drove flat out, and tried to get by as many
people as possible. There was a lot of traffic out there, and overall,
I was happy with our results. I'd like to get a win here soon though,
especially since it help us to continue to do well in the championship
points race."
Next Up
Darren will be traveling to Mosport this upcoming weekend for the
Mosport 200 Grand-Am Cup race with Zoom Motorsports, and will be
back in Brumos Porsche Daytona Prototype June 29-30 for the Brumos
Porsche 250 at Daytona.
