LAW WRAPS UP HOMECOMING WEEKEND WITH GRAND AMERICAN EVENT AT PHOENIX
Grand
American road racing standout Darren Law finished a double header
day this past Saturday, as he raced in the Grand Am Cup Grand Sport
class Luke Air Force Base 200, and then jumped into the Brumos Porsche
for his stint in the Rolex Sports Car Series Racetickets.com 250
that evening. Law, of Phoenix, Arizona, finished 2nd in the Grand
Am Cup and 6th in the Rolex Series event, putting on a great show
for family and friends that had come to Phoenix International Raceway
to see the hometown racer.
Grand
Am Cup
Law's race day started with a stint in the #17 Doncaster Brumos
Porsche 996 prepared by the Zoom Motorsports squad. Law’s
teammate David Lacey qualified the Doncaster car on pole with a
lap of 1:07.517 around the tight and bumpy 1.51-mile infield road
course, and started the race before handing off to Law in second
place on lap 57 during a routine green flag stop for fuel and tires.
Shortly
after Law left pit lane for his stint, a full course caution came
out, and the race leading BMW M3 of Turner Motorsports drivers Justin
Marks and Bill Auberlen was able to pit under caution. With four
lapped cars separating him from the lead car, Darren set out in
pursuit as the green flag flew for the restart. After some fantastic
passes of the lapped cars, Law fought hard to close the gap to the
#96 car, but had to settle for 2nd place as time ran out and the
checkered flag flew.
Rolex
Series
As the sun set over the Phoenix desert, and with a beautiful late
summer evening in store, the Grand American Rolex Series Daytona
Prototypes took to the track for their 250-mile race under the lights.
Law was slated to pilot the #58 Red Bull Brumos Porsche Daytona
Prototype in the second half of the race, and took over from teammate
David Donohue on lap 61 during a yellow flag stop for fuel and tires.
Donohue had qualified 15th with a lap of 59.447, and was able to
hand the car over to Law in 13th position.
Law immediately set out to make up positions armed with an intimate
knowledge of his hometown track. Darren was able to make up some
ground on the cars ahead of him, and by staying out of the trouble
that caught many cars out during a wild second half of the race
Quotes
- Darren Law
"It
was a long day for sure. I tried to close the gap to Bill (Auberlen
Grand Am Cup race), but on the longer runs the handling started
to go off a bit. It was a good race though, and finishing on the
podium here with all my family and friends felt really good. I always
enjoy racing here in Phoenix, and it has been a great home for me
and for my family."
"We really just tried to stay out of trouble in the Brumos
car (Rolex Daytona Prototype race). There wasn’t much grip
on track, and even though it was tough, I had to be patient with
the car and not make too many mistakes. I think it paid off well,
as we moved up to 8th from 15th."
Pre Race Activities
As part of the Phoenix 250 weekend, Darren traveled with several
drivers to nearby Luke Air Force base, where he got the chance to
meet the base commander and also was able to see some of the base
equipment including one of the F-16 Falcon high performance fighter
jets.
