LAW DONOHUE AND BRUMOS PORSCHE SURVIVE INAUGURAL LONG BEACH ROLEX GRAND AMERICAN RACE

Phoenix, Arizona –— It was a busy weekend of racing at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach where the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve, made their inaugural appearance before the exuberant southern California crowd this past Saturday. The #58 Brumos Porsche Fabcar driven by Darren Law and David Donohue survived late race contact with another car to finish 15th after running in the top ten for much of the event. The Daytona Prototypes represented the only Grand American Rolex Series cars, although a full field of 26 cars was in attendance and provided some thrilling race action.

Back Home
The Red Bull Brumos squad arrived at Long Beach ready to ride the wave of momentum that they have enjoyed from the start of the season despite being handed a 75 lb weight restriction as levied by Grand American on all the Porsche Daytona Prototype teams. Although Darren was not pleased with the added weight on the racecar he was very happy to be at Long Beach. Darren grew up in the southern California area not far from the famous track, and began his racing career in karts at many of the karting venues around Los Angeles.

Down to Business
The #58 car ran mid pack for both practice sessions, and David Donohue placed the blue and silver Brumos 11th on the grid with a lap of 1:21.390 around the famed concrete-lined 1.97 mile temporary street course. With a total race time cut from 2 hours and 45 minutes to only a 90-minute sprint, both Donohue and Law knew that working their way up through the field would be difficult but imperative.

Bump and Run
Law took over Brumos entry from Donohue on a lap twelve stop during a full course caution to clear debris from the frightening accident that involved the #99, #8, #12, and #39 cars. After a long caution period, the field took the green for the restart on lap 22, and Law, happy with the balance of the Red Bull machine set out to hunt down the front runners. Law had worked his way to 4th and appeared on his way to a strong finish before the #75 Ford of Nic Jonsson made an ill advised passing attempt in turn 6 on lap 41, and made hard contact with the right rear of Brumos Porsche. Darren’s car spun from the contact, and with only 11 laps left in the event he worked his way back to 15th at the finish.

"It’s a shame really. We had a decent race car today. We didn’t have the pace of the front cars but I felt pretty confident that we were headed for a top 5. The Porsche power was strong and the crew worked hard all weekend. Nic (Jonsson) tried a pass in turn 6 which I feel was a pretty low percentage area for a pass. Nic is a good guy, and I am sure it wasn’t intentional, but I’m disappointed, especially since we were running well. I’m just hoping I can catch a break here soon and finish where I feel the car is capable of."
