LAW
WRAPS UP BUSY MONTH OF APRIL WITH PODIUM FINISH IN BRUMOS PORSCHE
AT VIR
It was an emotion filled weekend for endurance racer Darren Law
as he and Brumos Porsche Riley teammate David Donohue raced with
heavy hearts following the recent passing of Brumos boss, team owner
and sports car racing icon Bob Snodgrass. The Brumos driver duo
helped give a little something for the entire Brumos organization
to cheer about though, as they brought the #58 Red Bull liveried
Brumos Porsche Riley home a fine third place at Sunday's Virginia
International Raceway round of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car
Series 2007 season schedule. The well-earned and emotionally charged
podium finish vaulted Law and Donohue to a tie for sixth place in
the driverās championship points race, and marked the highest finish
for the #58 team this year.
Qualifying and Race
While the untimely death of Robert Snograss Jr. earlier in the week
certainly made it more difficult for the team and drivers to go
about the business of racing, each member of the Brumos squad to
take solace in the fact that Mr. Snodgrass would undoubtedly have
wanted the team to race. Despite a first practice session that placed
the Red Bull car down the order, the team worked hard to improve
the #58 and by qualifying Law was able to place the car a season
high third with a lap of 1:45.683.
Law started the Daytona Prototype-only race, a format adopted by
the Grand American officials this year where the GT cars and the
Daytona Prototype machines race in separate races over the weekend,
and maintained his third place position through the first several
laps. Law pitted on lap seven for a splash of fuel under a full
course caution, and the Brumos team sent Law back out in second
place.
Immediately following the restart, Law was able to pass the #01
Lexus Riley of Memo Rojas, and briefly held the lead before being
passed by Colin Braun in the #75 Pontiac Riley. Law held his second
place standing until lap 25 when the #10 Pontiac Riley of Jan Magnussen
took over the spot.
On lap 46 Law pitted under green for fuel, tires and a driver change.
Law turned the car over to Donohue who left the pits in sixth and
was eventually elevated to fourth following the pit cycles. Donohue
found himself squarely behind the #11 Pontiac Riley of Ryan Dalziel
in a close battle for the final podium spot. On the penultimate
lap, Donohue was able to squeeze past the #11 machine to claim third
place for the #58 Red Bull Brumos Porsche. As a tribute to Mr. Snodgrass,
Donohue then waited on track following the checkered flag for the
#59 sister Brumos machine, and the two finished their cool down
lap side by side.
Quote
Darren Law ö Driver #58 Brumos Porsche Riley
"A podium finish is always a good result, but this particular
podium is especially important. The car was good, especially at
the beginning of my stint, but as the track and tires got warmer
the car became a lot more difficult to handle. We are definitely
more competitive this year overall though, and I am hoping that
we can continue this string of strong runs when we get to Laguna
in May."
Other April Results and Points
The VIR race capped a busy month of April for Law during which he
raced almost every weekend. Law had especially strong runs with
the Flying Lizard Motorsports team and their #44 Porsche GT3 RSR.
In the ALMS events Law took a fourth place finish in the St. Petersburg
Grand Prix, finished second along with teammate Patrick Long at
the Long Beach event, and the next weekend teamed with Seth Neiman
in the same car to take fifth at the Houston street race. Law's
drives with the Flying Lizard team have currently placed him fifth
in the ALMS driversā championship points chase. Law's third place
with the Brumos team at last weekend's Grand American Rolex Series
event have him tied for sixth in that seriesā driversā championship
points race.
